When I was young, a mentor of mine shared a proverb: Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today. He then added a twist that struck a chord with me: Because if you do it day and you like it, you can do it again tomorrow.

It’s a simple idea, but it carries a powerful truth. Life tends to reward action, not hesitation.

I was reminded of this recently when thinking about a dear friend and former colleague, Richard, who was 24 years older than me and has since passed away. He once told me he regretted retiring seven years too late. For more than a decade, he and his partner dreamed of travelling around Australia in a caravan. Every year she was ready, and every year he delayed – convinced he needed a little more saved, a little more certainty, a little more time.

By the time he finally bought the caravan and set off, he realised the opportunity he had been waiting for had quietly slipped away. He couldn’t manage the caravan as easily as he once could. The hikes and tours they’d planned suddenly felt too demanding. Even a glass of wine hit harder than it used to. He said to me, with a mix of humour and sadness,

“Getting old sucks – and you should tick off your bucket list as young as you can, not as late as you can. Because even if you have the money, it’s no use if you’re too old to really enjoy the things you planned to do.”

That conversation has stayed with me for years. It’s one of the reasons I said yes to my recent trip to America. I reminded myself that we can’t take our money with us – but we can make the most of being alive.

Procrastination is a quiet thief. It steals experiences, adventures and opportunities, all while convincing us we’re being sensible. The truth is, the perfect time rarely arrives on its own. We create it.

For many people, downsizing is one of those decisions that gets pushed to “someday.” Someday when the house feels too big. Someday when the garden becomes too much. Someday when life slows down. But what if now is the moment that changes everything?

At Providence Lifestyle Resorts, we see the difference timely decisions can make. People who choose to downsize discover a life that feels lighter, more connected and more enjoyable – rich in all the ways that matter. A life filled with community, purpose and the freedom to enjoy the years ahead, not simply get through them.

So, if something here resonates – if you feel that gentle nudge – maybe it’s time to stop putting off the life you want. Maybe your someday is today.

And if Providence becomes part of that next chapter, we’d be honoured to help you write it.
